Background: Ethical leadership, as an approach that revolves around respect and faith in accepted ethics, beliefs, and values, considers the rights and dignity of others, and trust, faith, fairness, and honesty, can provide an effective solution for improving the efficiency and resilience of universities. Therefore, this study was formed with the aim of designing an ethical leadership model in selected Iranian universities. Method: In this study, a qualitative approach was used using data-based theorizing based on the Strauss and Corbin (1998) method. The research population was university professors and administrators from selected Iranian universities in 1404, of which 23 were selected as samples using purposive sampling and the snowball method. The interview tool was semi-structured. Qualitative data were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding to identify the main categories of the ethical leadership model in the selected universities. Results: The research findings indicated six main categories: Causal conditions had two individual dimensions including commitment to quality, managerial flexibility and leadership self-awareness and organizational dimension including meritocracy and ethical values. The pivotal phenomenon had two individual dimensions including social responsibility and ethical commitment and organizational dimension including sustainability perspective, transparency and educational innovation. Contextual factors had two individual dimensions including cultural diversity and organizational dimension including ethical culture building, academic independence and coordination with national policies. Intervening factors had two organizational dimensions including resource management and bureaucratic challenges and environmental-economic dimension including environmental ethics and financial sustainability and solutions had three individual dimensions including participation and group dimension including teamwork and conflict management and organizational dimension including employee empowerment and strategic planning and consequences had three individual dimensions including trust building and group dimension including strengthening organizational identity and organizational including strengthening the university brand, organizational resilience and infrastructure development. Conclusion: The proposed model of ethical leadership can improve the efficiency of universities, comply with global standards, and strengthen the position of universities at the national and international levels.
