Identifying and Prioritizing Factors Influencing Postmodern Socio-Ethical Values in Society

Background: Profound social and cultural transformations in recent decades have ushered human societies into the postmodern era. Postmodern values tend to lean towards relativism, pluralism, a focus on subcultures, expressive individualism, and a move beyond metanarratives. The present study aims to examine the prevalence of postmodern values and to identify and prioritize the factors influencing them among the citizens of Kermanshah.
Method: This is an applied study utilizing a descriptive-survey method for data collection. The statistical population consisted of all citizens of Kermanshah aged 18 and older, totaling 946,651 individuals. A sample of 384 people was selected from this population using cluster sampling. Data collection was conducted via a researcher-made questionnaire; its validity was confirmed through content and face validity assessments, and its reliability was verified using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Data analysis involved the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to assess normality, structural equation modeling (using SPSS and LISREL software) to test hypotheses, and the Fuzzy TOPSIS technique to prioritize variables.
Results: The research findings indicated that variables such as media consumption, moral capital, cultural relations, attitudes toward class values, and attitudes toward the public sphere have a positive and significant effect on the prevalence of postmodern values. Conversely, religious background and ethnic identity showed a significant inverse effect on these values, while gender-related attitudes had no significant effect. Fuzzy TOPSIS prioritization results revealed that media consumption ranked first (score: 0.462), followed by moral capital in second place (score: 0.448) and religious background in third (score: 0.423).
Conclusion: Overall, it can be concluded that the city of Kermanshah is undergoing a stage of "hybrid value transition." Citizens of this metropolis are situated between postmodern values and traditional ones; the city's cultural future will be shaped more by the cultural and media consumption of the new generation than by traditional institutions
