The Role of Emotional Self-Awareness in the Formation of Moral Identity with the Mediating Effect of Intrinsic Motivation

Background: The concept of moral identity indicates the importance of moral considerations for the framework of a person's identity, and since identity is an important part of human existence and affects the personal and social life of each person, Examining and identifying effective factors in the formation of moral identity of people is very important and important. Based on this, the current research was conducted with the aim of "the role of emotional self-awareness in the formation of moral identity with the mediating effect of internal motivation".
Method: The present study is descriptive-correlative in nature and practical in terms of purpose. The statistical population included all 11th grade students of one district of Zanjan city in the number of 5600 people in the academic year of 2023-2024. Among them, 350 people were selected as a statistical sample based on Morgan's table and available sampling method. Research tools for data collection included emotional self-awareness of Grant et al. (2002), academic motivation scale of Wallerand et al. Then the data was analyzed by structural equation modeling with the help of SPSS and Lisrel software.
Results: The results showed that emotional self-awareness has a positive and significant effect on both variables of moral identity and internal motivation. Also, internal motivation has a positive and significant effect on the formation of moral identity. Finally, the internal motivation variable has been able to play a mediating role in the relationship between emotional self-awareness and moral identity and has an indirect effect.
Conclusion: As a result, emotional self-awareness and internal motivation play a significant role in the formation of students' moral identity, and from this point of view, it seems necessary to conduct educational workshops to increase students' emotional self-awareness and internal motivation to have a coherent and integrated identity in schools.
