Background: The academic progress of learners is a function of one of the effective metacognitive factors called critical thinking. Considering this important role of critical thinking, the purpose of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of critical thinking and metacognition on academic success and mental health of students with the mediating role of moral beliefs. Method: The method of the current research was descriptive correlation type with path analysis approach. The statistical population consisted of 240 undergraduate students of Baghdad University, 150 of them were selected by simple random sampling using Cochran's formula. Standard questionnaires were used to collect research data. Data analysis was done using Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis and path analysis in SPSS and Lisrel statistical software. Results: The results showed that critical thinking has a direct effect on academic success and mental health. Also, critical thinking has a positive and meaningful effect on academic success and mental health indirectly with the mediating role of moral beliefs. It was also found that metacognition has a direct effect on academic success and mental health, and metacognition has a positive and significant effect on academic success and mental health indirectly with the mediating role of moral beliefs. Conclusion: The present research showed that metacognition has a deep connection with critical thinking. Together, these two components play an important role in academic success and mental health, and in the middle of this relationship, the concept of ethics and moral beliefs can play an influential role.
