The Role of Mass Media and Social Institutions in Preventing Immoral Behaviors of Children and Adolescents in Cyberspace

Background: With the expansion of the use of the Internet and virtual social networks, children and adolescents, as the most vulnerable group of users, have been exposed to serious risks of immoral and immodest behaviors. This review study, using an analytical-descriptive method and based on a review of legal and criminological sources, analyzes the theoretical foundations of immoral, customary, and legal behaviors of adolescents in cyberspace and the role of mass media and social institutions such as family and school in raising awareness and preventing such behaviors.
Conclusion: The results of the present study show that individual factors such as entertainment, financial, and revenge motives, along with social causes (family breakdown, addiction of members, emotional problems) and environmental causes (anonymity, attractiveness of cyberspace, lack of filtering) provide the basis for unethical, customary, and legal behaviors in adolescents. Social learning theories (Bandura), cultural criminology, imitation (Tarde), and Islamic teachings emphasize the importance of development-oriented and community-oriented prevention. Suggested solutions include producing educational media content, parental supervision, developing children's cyberspace services, intelligent filtering, and strengthening media literacy. Synergy between media and institutions can enhance children's psychological and behavioral security and reduce unethical behaviors |
