The Effect of Moral Intelligence Skills Training on Responsibility and Lawfulness in Children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Background: Since moral intelligence skills can help children accept responsibility for their behaviors and adhere to social norms. This study examined the effect of teaching these skills on responsibility and lawfulness in children with oppositional defiant disorder.
Method: The present study was a pre-test-post-test semi-experiment with a control group. The statistical population included second-grade elementary school students in Gorgan, from whom 40 students with oppositional defiant disorder were selected by convenience sampling and randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups of 20 students. The instruments used included the Responsibility and Lawfulness Questionnaire (Alipour & Jalali Farahani, 2006) and the Moral Intelligence Skills Training Protocol (Aliakbari et al, 2014). The experimental group underwent moral intelligence skills training for 7 sessions, and then a post-test was administered to both groups. Finally, the data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance.
Results: The results of the Shapiro-Wilk, Levene, and M-Box tests showed that all the assumptions of the analysis of covariance were met. The results of multivariate covariance analysis showed that the difference in mean scores of responsibilities and lawfulness after moral intelligence skills training compared to the control group was significant (P<0.01); so that moral intelligence skills training increased responsibility and lawfulness.
Conclusion: Moral intelligence skills training with an emphasis on practical moral experiences, such as understanding the consequences of behavior, empathy, and fostering a sense of responsibility, can significantly increase responsibility and strengthen lawfulness in children with oppositional defiant disorder.
